Metal Roof Styles

In Florida, there are many variations of metal roof styles. We like to put them into three main categories of metal roof styles and then I’ll explain the different profiles in each one.

  1. Standing Seam Metal Roofing. Primarily used for residential homes.
  2. Exposed Fastener Roofing, seen on both residential and commercial buildings.
  3. Residential Metal Roofing that looks like other types of roofing, such as tile, slate, and cedar.

Standing Seam Metal Roof Style

The first one would be a residential standing seam, which is what a lot of people picture when thinking of a metal roof in Florida. This type of roofing material comes will significantly improve the curb appeal of your home. It also has a longer life span and a very high wind resistance, which comes in handy in Florida.

This type of roof comes in a variety of styles. The main visible difference of appearance is in the flat portion of the roof panels. There are some that are completely flat and others that have “ribs”. These ribs come in different styles, just as v-rib, bead-ribs, and pencil-rib.

Ribs on a metal roof provide extra strength to the roof panel and keep it from “oil canning”. Oil canning is what you can get if you have a standing seam roof that is flat in between the standing seams. It’s basically ripples in the metal and it looks unsightly from the ground. So the ribs help to prevent that.

As with any of the metal roof styles, you can get the roof in different gages of metal providing different levels of strength. The method of installation also affects the wind resistance and warranties available.

Standing seam metal roof styles are the number one choice for homeowners here in Florida. We strongly recommend it because of the level of protection you will get for your home.

This type of roof is also known for the fact that its fasteners are hidden, which help prolong the life span of the roof and protect against installation errors. As applause to this next style of roofing.

Exposed Fastener Metal Roof Styles

This category of metal roofing comes in many variations. Perhaps the most common that you may have seen on a home or shed is the classic corrugated metal roof as seen in the picture below.

But there are also many other styles of exposed fastener metal roof styles. They all perform basically the same. The appearance of them will be slightly different but that doesn’t affect the performance. The main difference in performance will be in the gauge or quality of paint used.

Here are a few of the different profiles for the metal roof styles that have exposed fasteners.

As we always say when it comes to this type of roof. It may be slightly more cost-effective to have the exposed fastener system but it puts your home or business at risk. Every screw is a chance for a leak.

How Long Does A Metal Roof Last

You could have a poor installation problem or the expanding and contracting of material. Which we have in Florida on a regular basis, because of how hot it gets and then the temperature cools quickly as a rainstorm comes in.

Unfortunately, it is very easy with these metal roof styles, to install the fastener at an angle or over tighten it. At which point it is highly susceptible to leaking in the near future.
